Image shows the oil–water interface, coloured red on the oil-majority side and blue on the water-majority side, at time-step 2.5x105 of a lattice-Boltzmann simulation of the formation of a cubic amphiphilic gyroid mesophase. Running vertically is a boundary between two domains of different chirality. The work, published by Chin & Coveney (Proc. R. Soc. A (2006) 462, 3575–3600 (doi:10.1098/rspa.2006.1741)), was performed as part of a joint US/UK high-end computing project, which made use of a federated grid comprising the US TeraGrid and the UK national supercomputing facilities at Manchester (CSAR) and Daresbury Laboratory (HPCx).
