Summary:
Cover image: A plate from The dodo and its kindred (London, 1848) by H. E. Strickland and A. G. Melville. The illustration is based upon an earlier (1628) portrait of the extinct bird by the Flemish artist Roelandt Savery (1576-1639). Hugh Strickland was elected a Fellow of the Society in 1852, just a year before his death: killed by a locomotive while geologizing in a railway cutting.
