This two-part Theme Issue of Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A contains selected papers from the UK e-Science All Hands Meeting 2009, which was held in Oxford between 7 and 9 December 2009 (http://www.allhands.org.uk/2009/).
The papers that appear here have been through a rigorous peer-review process, as described in the introduction to the first Theme Issue (Watson et al. 2010). They reflect the wide range of topics covered under the banner of e-Science, and illustrate how researchers from a variety of fields have collaborated to tackle important scientific and societal challenges in novel ways.
